Migration from the agency : A thesis about participation and sensemaking in a downsizingprocess at the Swedish Migration Agency (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Downsizing is an organizational strategy which often implies a lot of negative experiences for the employees at the organization. We also found very few pedagogical articles on the subject. The purpose of this thesis was to study employees’ perception of a downsizing process in a Migration Agency office. What we aimed to do was to study how the interviewed employees perceived conditions for sensemaking processes, the ability to influence and the downsizing itself. The theoretical framework lies in the concepts sensemaking and participation. From these concepts we used former research from which we found more concepts we could use to describe the downsizing. We collected data through eight semi structured interviews and we analyzed the material thematically. The results indicated that the interviewed employees perceived their working environment unstable and that there were some deficiencies when it came to the sensemaking processes and participation. The conclusions showed that the thesis’ main concepts which in parallel effected one another in a cyclic process.
