Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A case study commissioned by ABB Electrification Products on digitizing within the switchgear industry, with an organizational change and business relations perspective. The following summary is a translated abstract based on the complete study - “Digitalisering inom ställverksbranschen – En fallstudie om digitalisering med utgångspunkt i företagsrelationer samt organisatorisk förändring”.

The aim of this study was to understand, describe and explain the impact digitization has had on design and business processes for panel builders within the switchgear industry, more specifically six clients of ABB Electrification Products (ABB EP). This was done from an organizational change and business relations perspective with the purpose of providing ABB EP with a recommendation of strategic decisions to enhance, improve and ease the transition into a more digital climate for an otherwise, as described, conservative industry. Thereby also increase sales in a more digitalized market.

Six interviews were conducted with domestic clients in Sweden varying in size, geographical location and the extent of perceived digital implementation. The interviews were done using a semi-structured guide where the aim was to describe the phenomena of digitization. The study was built around the principles of grounded theory and the data was analyzed using theories from distinguished authors within the fields of organizational change and business relations.

The study shows that digitization has led to more effective business processes, mainly in the office, where design and material plans can be created from a pre-set of solutions integrated in the system. Whereas the processes of manufacturing have seen little to no difference the past years aside from digital time tracking. Despite the proven effectiveness of digitalized business processes, the industry is still partly suffering from conservatism based on beliefs and what seems to be a fear of the new. The study’s result also points towards some perceived lack of digital competence and interest, which impedes digital process development. Furthermore, the analysis showed that ABB EP can indeed influence the willingness to change and adapt by focusing on several properties directly connected to expectations and participation, trust and commitment, adaption and mutual dependency. Theses have all proven to have an impact on the customer’s attitude towards and internal communication regarding further digital implementation.

By adapting to the clients’ needs, as presented in this study’s conclusion, while maintaining mutual dependency and interests, ABB Electrification Products can strengthen and improve the flow of information and communication and thereby decrease the gap of digital competence and as a result, gain a stronger business network.
