East meets West : A qualitative study of the Swedish leader in China (English)
Abstract [en]

This qualitative study examines how Swedish managers in China, with Chinese employees, deal with cultural differences, and how potential challenges can be addressed. The study also aims to highlight cultural differences between China and Sweden that can lead to challenges for the Swedish manager. Our choice of research methodology includes qualitative interviews. The empirical study consists of four Swedish managers operating in Hong Kong. Two of the respondents work in Swedish companies, another in a French company and the fourth in a Chinese company. The theoretical framework used to guide the entire process of the research study is constructed using theories about leadership, culture, and communication. After analyzing the empirical data with the selected theories, the research indicates that some challenges arise in trying to understand the culture of the other party and in how the leadership should be adapted. Partial adjustment is required from Swedish managers in order to successfully manage Chinese employees. The most noticeable differences between the cultures were their perception of money and how the culture of the company was built.
