Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This thesis regards volunteers and motivation in a joint-stock company. The research study is implemented by a qualitative approach and a specific case has been studied. The case study has been performed at the organisation STUK, where most of the workers are volunteers. The organisation operates a restaurant and a night club. To understand the unusual phenomena, that regards volunteers and joint stock companies, established theories in work motivation have been used. In this study, the Two-factor theory is one of the used theories. Known theories in the research field of motivation and volunteers have also been used. These theories regard inner motivation, external motivation, and interaction. During the study, several paradoxes have been identified. To analyse these paradoxes, theories about organisational culture and organisational structure have been used. The motivation factors that drive the volunteers to work in the company are the (1) solidarity with other volunteers, the experience of doing a (2) good deed, (3) personal development, (4) interest of the work task, and (5) benefits. The conclusion of the study implies that motivational factors that drive volunteers in joint-stock companies are the same as the motivational factors in non-profit organisations. This conclusion may depend on the perception of the volunteers in this study that are of the impression that they volunteer for a non-profit organisation. The field of research of the combination of volunteers and joint-stock companies is in an early stage and this thesis creates a contribution to this area.
