Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how the mainstream media and alternative media cover cases related to immigration, migration and the picture of Sweden. Ten articles from traditional media outlets and ten articles from alternative media outlets were used to execute this study, about the case of Katerina Janouch. Theories about objective journalism were researched and used in a qualitative text analysis that examined the articles. This qualitative text analysis has a hermeneutic point of departure. The theoretical framework contains five requirements about objective journalism. Results show that 7 of the 20 articles meet the first requirement – using primary sources. Of all the 20 articles, 17 meet the second requirement – balance. There are 9 articles that meet the third requirement – neutral presentation. I found that 17 of the articles meet the fourth requirement – demonstrating used sources. Finally 9 of the articles meet the fifth and final requirement – to not overdramatize. Results also show that the articles from mainstream media performed better than the articles from the alternative media in accordance with the 5 requirements. Especially concerning the last requirement (to not overdramatize) where 7 of the articles from mainstream media met the requirement while only 2 articles fromthe alternative media made it.
