Project manager’s occupational path to  the project manager role : A qualitative study of project manager’s occupational path  to getting the project manager role (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study illustrates how project managers have approached the project manager role. It’s a qualitative study based on stories from eight people working in four different organizations. The purpose of the survey has been to study how professional project managers approached the project manager role. Through semistructured interviews we took part in the respondents' active and less active choices, from studies to their professional life, to see how it has influenced their way to the project manager role. We have chosen to delimit the study based on four themes: personal qualities, experience, gender and organization. Together, these four themes constitute our self-designed analysis model called the PEGOmodel, which has been used to process the empirical materials from this study. We wanted to see to what extend personal qualities, experience, gender and organizations have influenced their way to the project manager role. This study have also highlighted whether these themes were dependent on each other. This study is based on two research questions as well as a hypothesis. The results showed that personal qualities and organization are the themes that have influenced the respondents’ path to the project manager role to the greatest extent. In many cases, the project manager role has entailed great responsibility in a dynamic environment. This has led to some respondents searching for this particular environment, because it matched their personal qualities and preferences. The theme organization affected to a large extent, as it enabled work in projects and thus also the role of being project manager. Based on our respondents' experiences, we also stated that project management could be used as a tool for retaining staff in the organization. When an employee stated that the tasks had become monotonous and no longer stimulating, it happened that their boss assigned the employee a role as a project manager instead. Experience also influenced the respondent’s path to the project manager role to a relatively high extent. Previous experience and competence has in many cases led to the fact that people have been offered the project manager role. Based on respondents' experiences, it was not possible to see that gender influenced their path to the project manager role to a particularly significant extent.
