Religious spirituality and its significance for the health of elderly people (English)
Abstract [en]

More and more people reach old age, and life expectancy increases worldwide. A significant proportion of these persons are practicing religious spirituality. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the role of religious spirituality in elderly persons perceived health. Nine qualitative articles are studied in this review, with a total of 121 participants representing four countries: USA, Sweden, Australia and Lebanon. The articles are analysed according to Friberg’s five step analysis method. The analysis revealed four themes; Religious spirituality produces strength, gives meaning to life, provides a sense of security and produces the feeling that God is in control. The result shows that religious spirituality has predominantly positive effects on the perceived health, with the exception for occasional cases where religious spirituality could have a negative impact.

Religious spirituality is seen in this literature review to have an impact on the perceived health of the older people who practice it, thus it would be meaningful for health professionals to be aware of the importance of spirituality. Further research in the field would be desirable, as there is very little literature published on the subject.
