Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During the 4th of february 2016 the Swedish government decided to give six million kronor to the Swedish social board (Socialstyrelsen) so that the board could develop national guidelines for endometriosis. The news media and “the press”, when reporting on this and the dicease in general, becomes co-creators in the public discourse of endometriosis and the understanding of the endometriosis patients. This thesis therefore examines how six of the larges newspapers in Sweden have written about endometriosis since the governments decision and six month a head. It has also been intreresting to look for changes during time in the newspapers. The analysis has used discourse theory as a basis and has also been inspired by gender, queer and intersectional studies. By doing so the thesis can show that a conflict is formed within the discourse between endometriosis patients and the doctors but also that an expertness is important within the discourse that is related and adapted depending on which subject it refers to. The analysis also shows that endometriosis patients are made into victims, but this is also depending on who endometriosis patient is. Therefore a factor of success in important to avoid victim-making. One of the most central parts of the discourse is the importance of motherhood. As for endometriosis, it is described as something that affects only women, an furthermore as inadequate and as binary in terms of intensity.
