Abstract [sv]

Aim: To describe family members’ experiences when the patient is receiving palliative care. Method: A systematic literature study with descriptive synthesis. Results: Family members experienced abandonment due to loneliness and social isolation. They experienced responsibility towards the patient, which caused anxiety and guilt. Through consolation and comfort the family members could experience well-being. Conclusion: Family members need to be acknowledged and involved to be able to experience well-being and relieved suffering when the patient is receiving palliative care. The understanding for the family members experiences can in combination with a genuine commitment from the nurse contribute to a good support for the family members. By supporting and making the family members involved in an individual way their quality of life can be fostered and their suffering be relieved.
