Agamemnon and the Hebrew Bible
University of Texas, El Paso.
2016 (English)In: Svensk Exegetisk Årsbok, ISSN 1100-2298, Vol. 81, p. 1-24Article in journal (Refereed) Published
Abstract [en]

Substantial parts of the Hebrew Bible reflect awareness of, and significant interaction with Greek culture. Homeric epic should be reconsidered for its possible impact on narratives in the Hebrew Bible. This article calls attention to striking correspondences between Agamemnon in the Iliad and the portrayal of two kings, Saul and Ahab, in the books of Samuel. Behind the contours of Saul’s paranoia and visitation by evil spirits, and behind Ahab’s contemptuous treatment of prophets, and less-than-heroic wounding on the battlefield, the particulars of Agamemnon’s character are visible.
