Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine performance in older drivers while using gear selectors, with focus on human errors. The research questions concerned differences in the amount of errorsmade, types of human errors that are related to the use of the devices and also the effect of hidingthe gear selectors and the gear selection patterns. Drivers between the ages of 50 – 75 used sixdifferent gear selectors for cars while they performed tasks in a car simulator. The study had awithin-subjects design where all subjects tested every gear selector. The primary tasks in the testsituation was to execute shifts while the test participants also performed the secondary task, which was the Lane Change Test, in a driving simulator. The results show that traditionalconfigurations of gear selectors, polystable joysticks with the gears in a “J”-layout, causes theleast amount of human errors. Gear selectors with the appearance of a traditional gear selector butwith different and complex functionality, as well as monostable gear selectors, cause a largeramount of human errors.
