"Det är inte så mycket prat om utbildning": En kvalitativ studie om ungdomars upplevelser av studieavhopp
2015 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study that presents the result from five semi-structured interviews with five adolescents between 19-25 years of age. These young people live in the municipal of Luleå and have not finished their upper secondary school education. The aim with this study is to examine the experiences these young people have of not graduating, and find out what influenced their decision not to do so. The theoretical concepts presented in this study are those from Bourdieu: Capital, habitus and cultural reproduction. The study also presents articles and earlier research that are consider relevant for this study. The result shows that the vast majority of these young people, all but one, have experienced the separation of their parents sometime during their childhood. Many of these young people have parents of working class background, as do other adults they have close relationships with. The attitude of their parents toward education is, according to these young people, rather unengaged. In some cases they hardly speak of school or education. Others describe their parents' attitude toward education as mainly about how it facilitates getting a job. These young people all chose to leave upper secondary school before graduating, and tend to describe the reason for this differently. All five of these young people talk about how important the role of the teacher is in coping during their education. According to them, supportive and engaged teachers and adults is the most important component of an upper secondary school. All but one indicates that one has a responsibility to not become idle when one does not graduate. The analysis indicates that family background significantly influences whether young people complete their secondary education or not.
