Berättigande av datortomografisk helkroppsundersökning vid trauma: En litteraturstudie

Whole-body computed tomography (WBCT) is an important method to quickly and precisely identify and exclude injuries in trauma. WBCT includes examination of brain and cervical spine, as well as thorax and abdomen with intravenous contrast media. Unnecessary examinations must be avoided due to the use of ionizing radiation, and alternative methods including less or none radiation dose must be considered. The aim of this literature review was to investigate the justification of WBCT. This study includes 17 scientific articles. The articles indicate that WBCT is a valuable diagnostic tool which can lower the mortality, shorten the time to diagnosis and surgery, and reduce patients’ hospital stay. However, unjustified examinations are occurring. The clinical examination must be a part of the decision making, and the criteria as well as the methods of selection must be developed, in order to ensure the justification of WBCT.
