Log diameter measurements using ultrasound

Abstract [en]

The log diameter measurement error in today's harvesters results in a poor possibility for adaptation of logs to the requirements of sawmills. To increase the accuracy of these measurements, different methods for non-contact diameter sensing have been tried for over 10 years. Unfortunately none of these tried methods have resulted in serial production of a system for non-contact sensing. The overall goal of this project is to develop a method for non-contact measurements of log diameter using ultrasound. As a first step in this project, this thesis will investigate the possibility of using ultrasound for log diameter measurements. The thesis will also suggest ideas for further developments.
