This project is the result of a thesis from a Master of Science in Industrial Design with specialization Product Development at Luleå University of Technology. The project was been performed in collaboration with Nordic Sport and is about the development of new material carts for the throwing events in athletics, javelin, shot put, discus and hammer throw.The proposed customer’s needs in functional and esthetic requirements were examined by gathering information in the form of a market research, competitive analysis, surveys and interviews with the company. Using the information gathered, a set of requirements where compiled which was used as a support during the project.Through a systematic approach to problem solving, methods including both brainstorming sessions and a workshop resulted in a lot of partial solutions presented that could meet the demands and requirements on the new trolleys. From these partial solutions a comprehensive solution was constructed based on weightings which formed the basis for concept generation.The design of the material carts was developed through discussions with Nordic Sport and a 3D model was created, this model was then developed further in collaboration with Nordic Sports to produce a final concept.The result was a material cart, built in a modular system, with small changes to fit all four materials to be transported. The color and shape goes well with Nordic Sports current catalog and their brand nordicsport.com.The cart has a more modern appearance and great improvements of usability and ergonomics compaired to the existing carts but also the competitors. Whit these new carts Nordic Sport can maintain their reputation as a supplier of quality products and take even more market shares.
