Evaluation and implementation of protocols for configuration data export from IMA
2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This master thesis describes the evaluation of different techniques to export configuration data from the network management system IMA (Integrated Management Applications). In order for IMA to interact with other network management systems in a standardized way, interfaces called Integration Reference Points (IRP) should be supported. In this particular case, when exporting configuration data, the two IRPs called Inventory and Topology IRP and Notification IRP are important. The techniques evaluated as possible candidates for IRP implementation are: SNMP, XML, LDAP and CORBA. Both technical and economical issues are considered, including the differences and limitations of the protocols and third party software based on the demands of both IMA and higher-level management systems. The conclusion drawn from the evaluation is that XML is the most suitable alternative. A prototype application, made by the author, demonstrating the protocol's usefulness in the IMA environment is also described.
