Local renewable energy sources for rural electrification in Tanzania
2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

Electrification co-operatives are a new approach to electrify rural Tanzania. A use of local, renewable energy sources instead of diesel for power production is desirable from an environmental point of view. For this reason, the Swedish International Development Authority, Sida, is hesitating to assist electrification projects where diesel generators are used. This Master's thesis shows that a limited use of diesel generators is sometimes preferable, as the technologies for power production utilising renewable energy sources, cannot yet be considered as a cost effective way of reaching social and environmental aims.
