Abstract [en]

Gazelles are important for the economic growth of countries, thus they account for a large proportion of new jobs. Gazelles are characterized as fast growing and entrepreneurial. However, it is a challenge to manage gazelles and to maintain growth and scholars do not agree on what the cause is. The disagreement mainly lies in the role of formal management control system in gazells. Some scholars argue that it is necessary to implement more control in order to manage the growing company, while others argue that formal management control inhibits the creativity and innovation of the company. The purpose of this study was therefore to gain a deeper understanding of the role of management control in gazelles and thereby increase the knowledge of how management control can affect the outcome of the gazelles. The outcomes of the gazelles were categorized either as successful or less successful cases. To capture the whole view of the gazelles situation factors were also included since they most likely affects the selection of management control systems. A qualitative method was with a deductive approach was selected. A comparative case study of three gazelles in Norrbotten, operating in the consulting industry was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were the main source of empirical data. The results indicated significant differences in the management control system of all gazelles in the study. Companies with a successful outcome focused more on the informal control, and by a strong culture motivated their employees. In the less successful case there was a lack of informal control, while the formal control was abandoned. Three contingencies were identified that most likely had affected the management control system. These contingencies were external environment, organizational structure and organization size. The interviews revealed that manager personal traits seem to be an important factor in the outcomes of the companies. This study did not intend to investigate the manager's personal traits, thereby this is suggested as a future research proposal.
