Abstract [en]

Sustainable development is a wide term where the awareness increases for both individuals and companies about an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable society. Construction projects have a major impact on the society and the environment since it demands extensive recourses and is built for a long-term perspective. It is important that project managers act to provide a more sustainable project result and also keep in mind the possibility of technique replacement in the future. The aim with this thesis was to find a methodology to integrate sustainability into construction projects so that project managers can work with it in a systematic and standardized way. Faveo project management AB (Faveo) is a consulting firm that provides services of project management within construction projects. Faveo has been studied as a case and it has been conducted an empirical and theoretical study to achieve the aim of this thesis. Based on interviews and a focus group a situation analysis was conducted where it was found that Faveo has started a work on integrating sustainability focus in the firm, but has not yet developed tools or methods for project managers to work with this in projects. This thesis has resulted in a checklist and a handbook that project managers can use to ensure that they have taken the most important aspects into account regarding sustainability in projects. The checklist has been developed from the empirical and theoretical studies and is divided in sustainability commitments for each process group: initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control, and closing. The handbook is a summary of this thesis where suggestions for improvement from the focus group have been taken into consideration to accomplish an efficient handbook. The handbook is meant to serve as a knowledge base for project managers, where also the checklist is included. Using the checklist and the handbook, a company will be able to systematize and standardize its sustainability efforts in projects. To achieve this, the checklist needs to be used by all project managers in the firm and it needs to be used during the whole period of the project. To improve their sustainability efforts, the company also needs to ensure that a focus on sustainability is established in all departments, in the business strategy and in the execution of the project. Education has to be introduced for both new and existing employees to get an accepted level of knowledge in sustainability.
