Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what methods and tools teachers use in their teaching with the purpose to affects pupil’s motivation to practice.The theoretical points of departure are to be found in the socio-cultural and the behavioristic theories of learning.Five qualitative interviews and two electronic surveys has been used in this study. The informants is currently active instrumental teachers in arts school, public school and high school. The interviews was transcribed and the material was analyzed to reach the result.The results show that the most important elements that affects pupil’s motivation to practice is to be found mostly outside the classroom. These elements are musical context, role models, relations and the community. To be able to affect pupils motivation to practice teachers should do their best to let these elements influence the education which is complicated by the short lessons. Thereby, the conclusion shows that the pupils are affected more by the surroundings, which the teacher should take into account.
