Abstract [en]

The old risk analysis for the municipality of Älvsbyn was dated to 1996 and needed update in order to identify the risks of today. With this study the fire department of Älvsbyn has got its new risk analysis.This study aimed at identifying the most frequent risks and those with the greatest consequence for the fire departments work area in the municipality of Älvsbyn. The risks were divided into three categories; risks for life and health, economical risks and environment risks.The second largest risk for physical danger is the traffic accidents and it is also the most frequent type of alarms for the fire department apart from automatic alarms. The number of traffic accident had increased during the last few years averaging 23 accidents a year. Falling accidents is not something the fire department is working with that often, although it is the most common accident in Sweden and is expensive for the society in terms of costs for sick leave and other consequences.The greatest financial risk for the municipality is fire in buildings, where fires in public buildings represent higher cost. The calculated median of the cost can differ a lot between years. A total average for the cost of fires within the community is 4.75 million Swedish crowns a year.From an environmental point of view, the greatest risk is some type of pollution in the form of a leak into the water systems from the transports, both on roads and the railway. The consequence for the environment and the wildlife would be severe, and the cost for cleaning and decontamination would be high. Consequences for life and health would probably be less dire.The risks in a small municipality as Älvsbyn are on a whole quite low. Proposed measures for the risks identified are to inform businesses and residents about the key risks within Älvsbyns municipality, because it is considered most cost-effective in view of the risk spectrum. Continuous supervision and also directed supervision from the fire department are suggested as measures to be considered.
