Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe occupational therapy interventions and their effects on children aged 0 to 18 with cerebral palsy (CP), based on current research. The study was designed as a literature review, where the authors searched within relevant databases for scientific articles designed with a quantitative method, in order to answer the aim of the study. The search were based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and resulted in 15 articles. The interventions were analysed based on Fisher’s (2009) intervention forms. The evaluation instruments for the interventions were analysed based on the levels they measured: level of activity, level of function, level of activity/function or well-being. The results showed that most occupational therapy interventions for children with CP focused on body function, as they were performed with the aim of training the child’s underlying body functions, using activities not chosen by the child or by their parents. The effect of the occupational therapy interventions resulted in an improvement of the child’s body function and occupational performance. The conclusion of the study was that the interventions with focus on the child’s body functions resulted in improved body function and occupational performance. The interventions with focus on body function don’t follow Fisher’s (2013) recommendations of occupational therapy interventions based on and focusing on activity. Occupational therapy interventions should strive to be occupation-based and occupation-focused, in order to become more client-centred. This will make the occupation more engaging and meaningful to the client and increase their ability to perform it in a competent manner, as well as ensure that the profession maintains its unique focus on occupation.
