Development and industrialization of the construction process involves not only a change of the process itself, but also the activities within the process. Therefore, people involved in the construction process ought to adapt to new conditions. Hence, this master thesis focus on the altered conditions facing the architect and the design process within an industrial context, in order to explore how an architect can be able to execute a design process based on a pre-defined building system and analyze which values that can be produced from such a process . P303 started in 2007 as a part of NCC. A pre-study and product development phase resulted in a product, consisting three different housing plans which by configurations creates two floor row houses. As a part of the development within the project of P303, the opportunity was given to conduct action research. This enabled conclusions and answers of the research questions of this thesis and further development of proposals of housing plans from the building system of P303: a four-story staircase entry, containing 16 units of 1-, 2– and 3 bedroom apartments. These plans, sections and sketches are a result of this thesis and is not related to the development of P303. The research of this thesis is multidisciplinary and the analysis that been made are based on theory from literature in construction, research from the writing process (as an attempt to look at other creative processes) and philosophy. This altogether have been integrated into the presentation of the case study. Through this thesis, the definition of quality was examined. Quality is an evaluative measurement of the good qualities within an object. When it comes to quality and architecture the subject is the building itself. Qualitative architecture is therefore an evaluative measurement that contains the good attributes within the building, and should therefore be measured on a holistic evaluation. Hence, such an evaluation process incorporates qualities of various types - measurable and immeasurable values. Research of immeasurable values made by Ola Nylander has been an important tool in the analysis of the housing plan that where made through the case study. Ideas and results from research in the writing process were used to analyze how the design process is influenced by its industrial context. This analysis shows the benefits of working on a detailed level at an early stage of an industrialized design process. Hence, such a process differs from the traditional design process where design in most instances starts with the focus on concepts and analysis, which aims towards a holistic end product. The risk of detailed design on an early stage in the industrial design process, however, is that there might be a loss of holistic design and abstract values.
