The purpose with this study was to find out which work forms and teaching methods that teachers use when they teach out mathematics and what their choices are based on. Further was the purpose to find out how the teachers work with staring point from the goal of the curriculum. According to the purpose we have discussed the expression “goals to strive against” in the curriculum and competence goals, as a possible interpreting to the strive goals. Our study is built on qualitative interviews where five mathematic teachers were interviewed. The inquiry has been performed in the later years of the basic education and on an upper secondary school, both located in Norrbotten. The result shows that the teachers in general pursue a traditional instruction, where the teacher goes thru a review on the board in whole class followed by individual work from the textbook. The result also shows that the teachers not in a great extent assume from the curriculums goals to strive against because it’s hard to interpret the curriculum in mathematics which results in that much of the competences that is in the curriculum gets lost. The time aspect is said to be one of the principals to the low variety of teaching methods and work forms and that the teachers doesn’t have time to reflect enough around the curriculums expressions and contents.
