Modeling a smart acoustic emission sensor in COMSOL Multiphysics

In this work a concept for a new type of acoustic emission sensor is presented. Using this concept a new smart sensor was designed. To aid in the design of this smart sensor a computer model was created using COMSOL Multiphysics. The computer model of the sensor was evaluated and optimized using both synthetic and experimental data. The result show that the sensor is able to do signal processing directly without the need of a computer, this results in an extremely energy efficient way of measuring and analyzing acoustic emissions as compared with today’s methods.
