”Hur ska någon kunna leva upp till ett sådant ideal som inte är verkligt?”: En receptionsstudie om skönhet i magasinet SOLO

Over the past few years, the media’s influence of women and their bodies have grown rapidly. A problem with this can be that women’s lifestyle magazines show beauty norms and not the real picture of women. The purpose of this analysis was to explore what lifestyle magazine for women, SOLO, delivers for the message in their beauty pages and how the female audience interprets these messages. The study is a reception study based on Stuart Hall's model of communication: encoding and decoding. The analysis is based on a text analysis and decoding of interviews. Participants of the interviews were six students that belong to SOLO’s target audience. The material of this analysis is based on twelve numbers of SOLO, and what has been analysed is one beauty page of each number. The results of this analysis indicated that SOLO suggests a limited image of beauty and focuses on visual appearance. The magazine requests the readers to use makeup but also look natural, and care about their looks to fit into the society’s beauty standard. The analysis of texts and interviews showed that SOLO claims to know what is popular in the beauty world and how the reader can reach that ideal. The interpretations of the interview participants’ were varying, but overall, the majority of them took oppositional interpretation of the texts in SOLO and were against the message of beauty.
