Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how femininity is staged in two of Rihanna's music videos. In recent years, Rihanna has been one of the most prominent artists. The semiotic picture analysis and the radical feminist theory became the tools to make this study possible. This is a qualitative study that was done to create an understanding and a thorough analysis. The videos "Pon de Replay" (2005) and "S&M"(2011) were analyzed by splitting them in 10 different scenes each. We constructed an analytical framework. In our analysis, we found a significant difference between these two videos. In "Pon de Replay" Rihanna's image was much more shy and soft. In "S&M" she had a tougher attitude and the video had a serious undertone.
