Dirigentens repetitionsteknik, kommunikation och ledarskap: En jämförelse mellan instrumental solistensemble och symfoniorkester under repetition av nutida konstmusik

The aim of this work was to investigate the conductor's rehearsal technique, communication and leadership skills with the musicians during rehearsal of contemporary music with instrumental soloist ensemble and symphony orchestra with professional musicians. The methods used were both my artistic work as a conductor through rehearsals and concerts of contemporary music with soloist ensemble Norrbotten NEO and Gävle Symphony Orchestra, and seven interviews with professional conductors and musicians. The artistic work was documented by video recording while the interviews were documented with audio recording. Analyzes of each material were made retrospectively, and was essentially qualitative, although quantitative elements were present. The result shows that the conductor should have a clear baton technique and gestures and clearly sort out the complicated rhythms and instruct musicians. Primarily, the conductor should work with the musical parameters of rhythm/ensemble, dynamics/balance and articulation but it is also important that the conductor can interpret the music and lift it to a higher level. The conclusions are: 1) the more unknown and complex music the more important to convey a musical whole to the individual musician and let it understand its function determined in whole; 2) the fewer musicians in the ensemble the more important to conduct with small gestures, preferably sitting, and to, sensitively through discussion with the musicians, listen to their knowledge and suggestions for musical performance; 3) the more musicians in the ensemble without special knowledge and interest in contemporary music the more important to inspire and motivate the individual musician .The differences between soloist ensemble and orchestra can often be large; it can apply both knowledge of, and interest in, contemporary music as expectations on the conductor’s communication and leadership. In order to make the rehearsal work both promote the artistic end result and contribute to a creative, good work climate, the conductor needs to be aware of these differences.
