Abstract [en]

Prostate cancer is a serious disease that affects the man, partners and family. The most common curative treatment method is radical prostatectomies operation (RRP), which has increased since the beginning of the 1990. The risk of dying in prostate cancer and/or the development of metastases decreases for those who have undergone surgery. The purpose of the study was to describe the experiences of everyday life in men with prostate cancer after having undergone a RRP operation. The study was carried out with purposive sample of six men. Data were collected with semi structured interviews and analyzed with thematic content analysis. The result revealed four categories formed into two themes; Adapt to that life has become more restricted; A willingness to go further. The results showed that the consequences for the operation, the RRP was curtailed in everyday life, to urine leakage, pain and a changing relationship were obstacles to living life as before. The operation was worth everything and they had a few extra years. Everyday change was not as great as they had imagined. Support from healthcare professionals, family and friends were important but also the support that they themselves have been to men in similar situations meant a lot to their daily lives. For the men to feel a gaze in everyday life, it is important that healthcare professionals gets increased understanding of how men feel in their situation in connection with the operation, in order to support, assist and strengthen their faith and hope. Our results indicate that it is important to highlight the problems relating to the consequences, after having been subjected to RRP operation, then we as health care professionals can provide the support needed for men to feel a gaze in everyday life, as they need support from their surroundings both before and after the operation.
