Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in Europe and the greatest cause of death in middle-age women. Every year, breast cancer diagnoses discover approximately 7000 – 9000 cases of breast cancer in women in Sweden. To detect breast cancer at an early stage, women between the ages of 40 – 74 are invited to mammography screening. Despite the advantages of early screening, there are a variety of reasons for why women do not take part in testing. Studies show that the absenteeism is represented by women with a weak economy, are single and come from a different background than the majority population. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe the factors that prevent women from undergoing mammography. Method: The method used was a study conducted as a general literature review. Result: The results showed that there are various factors that can affect women who avoid mammography screening such as the high costs, lack of information, culture and fear. Conclusion: The conclusion from the study can be used to better understand the barriers women may face during a mammogram. It highlights the importance radiographer’s role as far as giving information and that the treatment is essential for every woman.
