This thesis has been carried out in Finland at a company that operates in the stone industry, an industry where most businesses in Scandinavia only manufacture products to customer order. This is a result of tough market competition, mainly from Chinese companies regarding standard products manufactured within this industry.The objective of this thesis has been to study how Lean production and its related methods are applicable in production, where the product shape and measures are specified by the end costumer, with the intention to reduce lead time in production.The method chosen to find how Lean production relates in this context has been carried out as a value stream analysis of production where stone products are manufactured. Thereafter, a study of theories related to Lean has been performed to see if they can be used to reduce lead time in production of this sort, where the products are changing shape, measures and material from one product to the next, since they are produced to customer order.Part of the thesis has been dedicated to finding how some factors interact in the process of cutting quartz composite material to reduce the number of defectsoccurring. The defects that are most frequent are splinters that come off from thematerial edge, askew cutting in the material and cracking of the material when cutting. Of these possible response variables only splinters that come off werestudied, since the other defects did not occur during the execution of the experiment.The results of this thesis show that Lean production methods are applicable to some extent in this type of production. Some of the theories studied are suitable to use in the way they are designed, whereas others need some modification if they are to be used at all.The result of the factorial experiment that was conducted showed that feed rate and the interaction of feed rate, depth of cut and rotation speed when cutting are statistically significant when the number of defects is measured as a response variable.The conclusion of the analysis is that Lean production functions in a production environment ofthis type, where the product specifications are constantly changing. This because Lean production is a way of thinking with focus on diminishing waste, not a set of definite tools to be used to diminish waste in production. With this in mind, Lean production is very agile. The tools used within Lean production can be changed, and should also be changed with consideration to the situation at hand.
