Higher education in Sweden is very important to the individual and society. The individual gets the opportunity of a more attractive career and a deeper understanding of society, while society benefits from educated people to create value for society as a whole. It is also becoming increasingly important for universities to demonstrate quality because of the more intense competition. Previously the responsibility of quality assurance of higher education was on the Swedish national agency for higher education (Högskoleverket). However, since the 1st of January this responsibility has been delegated to the universities themselves, which highlights the importance for universities to have a great knowledge in this area. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the quality management system at a number of universities in Sweden and from that provide discussions and reflections about success factors that hopefully can assist universities in Sweden in the future. The thesis includes a literature review and interviews with six different universities in Sweden. The literature has then been compared with the interviews to provide analysis and discussions to fulfil the purpose of the thesis The result contributes with a compilation of how the universities prioritize among the values of Total Quality Management. A discussion about success factors and general recommendations is also presented, which primarily implicates that many universities need to adopt a more conscious pursuit of quality.
