Egress calculation is one of the most important parts in creating safe buildings from a fire point of view. Three ways of doing this is by calculation by hand as well as with computer simulation programs such as Simulex or FDS+Evac. In this report different egress cases will be calculated with these methods and then compared to each other. The results from the comparisons were different evacuation times for the different methods. The conclusion of the study was that the hand calculation gave a more conservative time than both of the two simulation programs hence results in a longer evacuation time than the real case sometimes. The comparison between the computer programs resulted in higher egress time for Simulex simulations than FDS+Evac. This was a consequence of Simulex evacuees leaving the building quicker in the first phase of the egress. Despite these differences the two programs are equals; the program Simulex is much more user friendly whereas Evac simulation results in a more visually appealing product.
