Symmetries and recursion operators of nonlinear differential equations

This work discusses the generation of an infinite number of Lie-Bäcklund symmetries for nonlinear autonomous evolution equations using recursion operators. A partial classification of nonlinear second order evolution equations is undertaken, with a full classification for the semilinear and quasilinear cases. An interesting result for the fully nonlinear case is obtained. A brief introduction to the concept of symmetries and transformation groups applied to differential equations is also given.
