Abstract [en]

This report has been carried out on behalf of Vidsel Test Range (VTR) which is a part of The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV).One of the main activities at VTR is testing missiles. One method for testing missiles at VTR is to use a remote controlled aircraft that tows a target. The missile that is tested is then shot against the tow target. The main reason for using a tow target instead of testing directly on the remote controlled aircraft is that it is more cost effective.The purpose of this report is to continue the design of a new tow target. The new design will be based on an earlier designed and manufactured part of the outer shell. The purpose was also to make the new tow target easier to manufacture and assemble than previous similar tow targets.Methods used are mainly the design process Sirius Masterplan and Pahl och Beiz method, Computer Aided Design using Creo Parametric 2.0, both 3D and 2D drawings, construction strength testing in a mechanical workshop and mechanical strength calculations.The report considers the parts needed for the outer shell of a new tow target but one priority has been to design the joints between the two half cylinders that will create the main body of the tow target. Another priority has been to design a new tow joint (the joint where the tow target meets the remote controlled aircraft).The project resulted in a different safety switch for the flares that often is used on the tow target. This allowed a new design for a new and less complicated tow joint. The results also includes the selections of joints between the outer parts of the tow target as well as propositions and designs for the cone shaped ends of the target, the fins, and a new method for making the target well balanced. 3D designs of the previous manufactured part of the outher shell and slight modifications to it is also part of the results. Using this report VTR could manufacture a new tow target or use it as a basis for discussion of manufacturing or further development.
