From Native to Web: Developing a Cross-Platform Home Care Application
2012 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

Tieto, one of Europe's leading ICT-service providers, is developing an application that can be used in mobile phones running the Android operating system in order to provide support to personal working in mobile health and care services (Swedish 'hemtjänst'). In this project I examine how best to take select portions of Tieto's native Android application and convert them to a web application using the technologies of HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, and JSON. During the process I design a web-based graphical interface. Functions for logging in, reading information about clients, and getting the day’s schedule are also developed. The end result is a mobile application that is able to work cross-platform without requiring a separate program for each mobile operating system. With this as a benchmark I discuss possibilities and restrictions of web-based versus native applications and explain how to obtain cross-platform functionality, informing future development and research in this area.
