Internet and social media are creating a whole new world for young people today. Where they can get in touch with the world and partake of both positive and negative experiences. The purpose of this paper is to focus on what harassment on the Internet means. If there are any difference between gender and the consequences it can provide young people who are victims of harassments. To gather information a literature search was done and it focused on scientific articles but also Swedish research of various organizations working with these issues. To interpret the results and get an understanding of why these phenomena occur the following theories was used; Thomsson and Elvin-Novak's theory of doing gender, Erving Goffman's dramaturgical analysis model and O.Duregårds theory of adolescence. The result shows that harassment on the internet is when a person because of an action performed by someone else gets hurt, sad, or feel less worthy. There is a clear gender difference where the girls more often use social media and posting more statuses and pictures while boys play more games and watching videos. The most common cause of harassment are due to behavior or looks. Statistics show that girls are subjected to violations to a greater extent. The places where the boys are exposed to nasty comments are usually when participating in games and it occurs when they are not performing well enough so it rarely have anything to do with look as for girls. Common consequences for those who have been wronged are mental illness, It can be anything from loneliness, stress, fear, aggression, thoughts of suicide and seriously mental illness. The Internet is a place where many harassment are taking place, especially vulnerable are women and the consequences are something you should take seriously.
