Mixing with Compressors: Impact of Visual Gain Reduction VU Metering on Mixing Decisions

Abstract [en]

Gain reduction in compressors are often represented visually and in this study an experiment was made to see if the visual metering, here a VU meter, would affect an audio engineer's mixing decisions. 14 subjects were asked to perform a mixing task using only a compressor. The task was to improve a music mix by processing the lead vocal and mix it into an already mixed arrangement. The task was done on two different music excerpts and both with and without a visual VU meter. Significant statistical differences in dialed in Gain reduction between metering conditions was found on one of the music excerpts and other indications of differences are discussed.
