Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to identify the factors that affect the passenger streams of regional train traffic within the Swedish conurbations Stockholm-Mälardalen, Västra Götaland and Skåneregionen. The knowledge about the factors that affect passenger streams could be used as a strategic tool to identify market opportunities by companies within the industry of railway related goods and services. To be able to handle the purpose the work has been separated into two different parts. The first part aimed to identify factors that somehow influence the development of passenger streams. The second part was focused on which of the identified factors that have the greatest impact on the development of passenger streams within the Swedish conurbations.The method was to collect theories, studies and conduct interviews and thereby create a framework containing the most important factors that influence the development of passenger streams. The sample of relevant references was identified by interviewing different experts within the subject area. By using such a technique there is a risk that the references get biased. To handle the risk most of the framework has have been based on multiple references. To estimate the impact of the factors different assumptions have been made. The trustworthiness of how the factors influence the development of passenger streams could be challenged. Therefore the conclusions regarding which factors that have the greatest impact on the passenger streams within the Swedish conurbations do not include every single factor. The conclusion just includes the factors with the greatest impact.Passenger streams are influences by three overall factors; (1) travel need, (2) travel mode selection and (3) transportation supply. All of the factors are complementary and if one of the factors is excluded there will not be any passenger streams. Travel need is affected by the region´s urban structure. A region´s urban structure is based on density and the transportation supply. Density relates to the distance between activities such as accommodation and workplace. Depending on the urban structure the needs of transportation will vary. Another important factor which drives the travel need is the expanding of Labor market areas. The travel need will also vary depending on the population growth and the employment. Travel mode selection concerns factors that affect individuals when they are choosing between different travels modes. The most important factors are gender, motor-vehicle density and travel time and costs. Regarding gender, men are often more likely to use cars regardless income and time restrictions. To own a motor-vehicle is a barrier for developing passenger streams on railway. The ones driving motor-vehicles are a potential market for creating passenger streams railway. The travel prioritizes of time and cost depends on income, the purpose of the travel and time restrictions. Transportation supply is the most important factor when it comes to developing passenger streams on railway. The transportation supply can contribute to generating passenger streams and affect travels mode selection. Furthermore the transportation supply is providing a specific amount of capacity and when that capacity is insufficient it can also inhibit the development of passenger streams.All of the Swedish conurbations have a strong forecasted development of passenger streams on railway. The regional train traffic in Stockholm-Mälardalen has an expected growth of nearly 50 % until the year of 2020. The main factor that will drive the development is the transportation supply. The plans are to creating a train traffic system which provides a higher rate of station stops and a better regularity. It will also be cheaper to commute between different locations. The new train traffic system is planned to the year of 2017. The regional train traffic in Västra Götaland has an expected growth of nearly 40 % until the year of 2020. The main part of the growth will relay on reallocations from other transportation modes. The region with the greatest growth rate is Skåne. The regional train traffic is expected to grow more than 100 % until the year of 2020. The growth will mostly be affected of the integration of the region of Öresund and the supply of train traffic capacity.
