Abstract [en]

Internet and social media have enabled encounters and communication between people in a new and different than ever before. However, this cyber world is at the same time an insecure and negative place. Crimes occur both offline and online. This essay is based on this insecurity and negativity, and aims to gain an insight into the problems that are related to adolescents and cybercrime based on a young people's point of view. More specifically, it was cybercrime such as violations, threats and sex offenses that were studied. In order to collect relevant data seven qualitative interviews of semi-structured character were conducted, with boys and girls at a school in Umeå. Adolescents' thoughts about the three types of cyber crime were linked with former research that had a focus on youth and cybercrime and also with cultural aspects of Castells theory of the network society. The analysis, based on young people's thoughts about the three types of crimes, displayed a distinction made based on if the crimes occurs offline or online. Crimes such as violations and threats were seen as less serious when they occurred in the cyber world than in the world offline. In conclusion, these two types of cybercrimes are not seen as serious, and therefore nothing that the young people believe should be reported to the police. Most of the adolescents also consider that people has to 'tolerate' a certain amount of violations and threats online. Much of the findings supports previous research done in the U.S. and Canada.
