The purpose of this study has been to gain understanding of the physical environment in preschools. The study has three research questions that, within an international context, pinpoint artefacts in- and planning of the physical environment. Qualitative interviews have been used as a method to collect data. Interviews were performed with preschool teachers who work with children in the ages 1-6 in Sweden and South Africa. The teachers’ opinions have been categorized as themes. Identified themes show which artefacts are important in the environment, such as a varying space and documentation of children’s work. The themes also show aspects of what is important to think about when planning the physical environment, such as availability of materials and the child group composition. Differences and similarities between Sweden and South Africa are also identified in the themes. The study shows that the teachers´ attitudes towards children make a big value for how the physical environment in preschools is designed.
