Abstract [en]

How do children and youth think about and perceive children’s participation in community development? What benefits do they find and what obstacles do they meet in their participation? Children are often excluded from the discussions concerning themselves, even more so from research about them. This study aims to give the children and youth a chance to give their opinions on the subject, to make their voices heard. With a personal connection to the Dominican Republic both trough previous visits and my Dominican boyfriend the country makes up the field of the study. This study discusses the benefits and limitations Dominican children and youth apply to children’s participation in community development and how they believe it can be applied in a better way. A qualitative method was used and nine focus groups were held with a total of fifty-seven children and youth. The result shows that the Dominican children and youth find children's participation in community development beneficial both on an individual and group level. The participating children become more aware and confident at the same time as the communities as whole become stronger and more united. They see short- as well as long-term benefits coming from children's participation as knowledge and development starts right away yet work positive for the future. The limitations discussed by the children and youth consisted of lack of co-operation and communication between children and adults. They suggested that this could be changed by focusing on the groups´ differences as strengths.
