Abstract [en]

Background: As new scientific knowledge in areas like motor control, neuro-dynamics and pain mechanisms is evolving, it is important that this knowledge is implemented in the daily OMT-physiotherapy clinic. OMT physiotherapist way of working has evolved over the past decades and shifted more and more to teach patients deal with their problems themselves, based on this knowledge. This means that higher demands are put on the teaching skills are of OMT physiotherapist. Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe how patients experience the teaching abilities of physiotherpists with the passing of OMT degree to guide them to manage their symptoms. Methodology: To answer this purpose a qualitative design was chosen, 10 patients treated by OMT- physiotherapists were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results showed that the meeting with the physiotherapist is a platform for learning and if there were gaps there, the rehabilitation process was affected. The participants demanded an explanation for their problems and wanted to know how to handle them by getting the support of exercise performance during exercise. Furthermore, during the rehabilitation process, the patients felt that it was important to get feedback both on their performance and on the progress of rehabilitation. Many of the participants felt safe in dealing with their complaints after completing a rehabilitation round and some patients described a process of reaching an acceptance when living with chronic pain problems. Conclusion: The conclusion of the study shows that if any of the above parts is missing it undermines the informant's trust and confidence in the OMT-physiotherapist skills. OMT physiotherapist working for dosage of training and guiding the informant toward acceptance is work that can be improved.
