AbstractThis study aims to identify the experience of university among first and second-generation academics with an undergraduate academic degree. This study is a qualitative study. The empirical materials consist of interviews with eight person’s experience of higher education. The higher education system in Sweden has expanded and evolved over time and studying at university has lost its character today. In the ages 18-65 years there are more highly educated than there are low educated individuals which can mean the difference between the groups in the experience of higher education is low (Högskoleverket, 2011). The results show that the first generation of academics often experienced the university later in life, in essence is the experience that the university contributed to something positive, and often they felt that the university would be more difficult than it turned out to be. The second generation's graduates usually imagined the university in the early teens as a probable path after high school, they felt that the studies were not as severe as previously thought, they saw that the university brought them something positive. The similarities between the groups were that they believed that the university would be more difficult, they experienced higher education as something that gave them positive experiences. The factors that can be considered indicative in the choice to studying at the university were primarily an academic upper secondary education. Also guiding parents and adults that encourage further study has an important impact as regard further studies. Even interests that can be converted into educational capital are considered to be a factor. One factor common among first-generation academics was a locked situation in need of chance and one alternative was to study on an academic level.
