Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to study how teachers' views on science affect childrens´ understanding and knowledge of plants in the surrounding area. We have formulated three research questions that have given us means necessary to investigate our purpose. We have chosen to have a phenomenological approach to the study and to make qualitative interviews with both teachers and children in one preschool. We have summarized and analyzed the interviews. We can conclude that the three teachers involved basically have the same views on science. This approach is reflected in the presence of science in activities with the children. Our interviews informed us that the teachers' views had a major impact on childrens´ understanding. Also, the interest among educators affected the interest of the children. One of our conclusions is that the pedagogues’ views on science have an impact on children's knowledge about plants in the area. Another conclusion is that the seven children involved in the study have knowledge and understandings of plants such as they can identify and describe parts of plants, they understand that plants need water to grow, even though they not yet have a full understanding of the correct scientific concepts.
