Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
The purpose of this study was to describe occupational therapy interventions and the results of these for people with dementia, through a literature review, an additional objective is the evidence value of the study. The authors have implemented a systematic research in databases containing articles on the subject of occupational therapy and they have searched for scientific articles based on keywords relevant to the purpose of the study. To analyse the gathered data the authors used Fishers (2009) types of interventions as a pattern to comprehend the focus of the interventions and also to see if the interventions were on an activity or a functional level. The results indicate that occupational therapists operate on an activity level to a certain degree and also client focused as they use activity oriented interventions. Most part of the interventions presented a substantial positive effect and was evaluated fairly objectively on a activity level and objectively on a activity and functional level. Most of the assessment instruments were used to measure the medical condition. The results also indicate that occupational therapists involve family members and nursing staff to a high degree in their interventions through education. However they do not appear to involve family members and nursing staff in the purpose of gathering information about previous habits and meaningful activities for the person suffering from dementia, despite the fact that this information would be helpful in the interventions. The author’s objective with this study is to increase the knowledge amongst occupational therapists, family members and nursing staff about occupational therapeutic interventions for people with dementia.
