Abstract [en]

The fast development in information techniques contributes to create huge amounts of digital records. The technical development is increasing for every time and the innovation cycles are getting shorter and shorter. Amounts of information are created every year and these are handled and saved in databases among others. For practical reasons, not least for legal reasons, want individuals and organizations to preserve information stored in databases in a long term way. Today's way of dealing with the various techniques for the use of databases is based on decisions that take consideration to different factors such as costs, knowledge, existing platforms, purpose, and more. With this starting point we have investigated if there are some support for the choice of technique when handling digital information in a long term preserving perspective. We have found that today there is not such a model. Our research question is: how can a general model for the choice of techniques for long term preserving of databases looks like? In order to develop a decision supporting model we carried out a literature study in the subject “model development” and “decision support”. Through literature studies and interviews we found out some “techniques”, “factors” and “purposes” that became a part of our model. The result was a decision supporting model for the choice of techniques in long term digital preserving.
