Due to the upward international trend for applied research in cold climates a new large-scale research facility is demanded. This master thesis aims to develop an architectural proposal for how such a building can be designed in order to enhance the site and make use of the natural conditions of the site. Through a literature study on parametric architecture and its applications, as well as a creative idea process, in accordance with the principles described in the book “Idea work”, methodology and knowledge to carry out such a project was acquired. The result is a building that connects to the location and history of the site through its unique design. The design is reminiscent of a glacier that has eroded the rock wall and forced its way down the mountain. When the building meets the ground it turns into a brook leading the glacier meltwater through a dramatic landscape shaped by water, ice and time. The building’s design with respect to the solar conditions of the site gives the building the opportunity to take advantage of renewable energy and the cold drafts that pours down the mountain’s edge can be utilized to drive the weather simulations inside the building’s test chamber. The unique panel system covering the building’s main facade gives visitors magical and unique views from all the different rooms in the building. The building combines world-class research with a full scale hotel business including both “spa & fitness” and conference in order to create a vibrant building 24-hours a day 365 days a year. The building offers the possibility of hosting international conferences and lectures in the modern auditorium of the building. The glacier is also expected to be an obvious choice for the climbing elite as it offers the world’s highest and pressurized indoor climbing wall with a height of entire 106 meters. The proposal was drafted after the goal of becoming a new landmark for both Norrbotten and Sweden. The proposal is not a fully developed proposal in any other aspect than a design proposal. It takes no account of the detailed technical and structural configurations and further work is proposed as a thorough needs-and location analysis and an accurate construction planning. The conclusion drawn was that the proposal had been difficult to fulfill without the creative and agile principles that characterized the design process and the parametric tools that made it possible to create a site-specific design of the building structure.
