CFD simulation of water behavior downstream of the Storfinnforsen dam

Abstract [en]

This master thesis is focused on the simulation of water behavior in downstream of the Storfinnforsen dam,which is located in Faxälven in the middle of Sweden, and specially in the curved channel after the bottom outlet (right submerged outlet, in this project) and compare with the result of physical modeling test which has done in Vattenfall R & D in Älvkarleby laboratory in November 2007. The two aspects which are compared to each other in this project are related to velocity and depth of water in the channel. Computational Fluid Dynamics is used to model the flow in downstream of the dam and in the curved channel which is exactly located after the bottom outlet. The full Navier- Stokes equations are solved under steady conditions with the commercial software ANSYS CFX 12.1. A three-dimensional geometry is used to model the reservoir, bottom outlet and the curved channel in of the dam. The whole project is divided to two main parts. The first part is related to reservoir and bottom outlet geometry which is called “Upstream Geometry” and curved channel which is called “Downstream Geometry”. Calculated results are compared to physical modelling test and showed that, in the specific working area of this project, except some sections across the channel related to water level and water velocity, the behaviour of water in both tests are pretty close to each other.
