Gemensam sång En självförtroendeboost?: En studie om hur sånglärare och sångelever på gymnasiet, folkhögskola och musiklärarutbildning upplever gemensam sång

This study examines how the singing teachers and vocal students in the music arts program, folkhighschool and university looks at the phenomenon of shared vocal-lessons (master class) and how they experience the form of teaching and what this can do for the students’ self-confidence. The study was conducted using 13 qualitative interviews were the informants were of mixed ages and had different experiences of shared vocal-lesson. There are no curriculum for university and folkhighschool that relates to the subject, however, we read through the curriculum for high school and linked these to the shared vocal-lessons.We found that all of the singing teachers feel that shared vocal-lessons is a good form of teaching to enhance students’ self-confidence. They also feel that the teaching method favors students’ personal and musical development, by daring to stand in front of others and to both give and take constructive criticism. Both singing teachers and vocal student feel that shared vocal-lessons is an important complement to the individual singing lessons to develop and become better at their instruments. All students find shared vocal-lesson, as a good form of teaching but the moment demands an explicit framework and a clear purpose. The students who have shared vocal-lesson continually feel that their self-confidence strengthens by the teaching method. The remaining students do not have shared vocal-lesson continuously and therefore cannot indicate that their self-confidence strengthened through shared vocal-lessons or by the individual singing lessons. All students feel that the need to obtain confirmation by the other students during shared vocal-lesson is significant. Therefore they see the constructive criticism, as they both had to give and take, as a positive thing.
